CITB SMSTS Refresher Online Course

The CITB SMSTS Refresher Online Course is a two-day virtual training programme delivered through instructor-led online learning. While the format is remote, the course content mirrors the classroom-based version, offering participants a detailed and interactive learning experience.

Sessions are conducted via Zoom, requiring attendees to use a laptop or desktop computer equipped with a webcam, microphone, and speakers (tablets are not supported).

This course is designed for those who have previously completed the SMSTS or SMSTS Refresher Course. Participants must provide evidence of their original SMSTS certification and confirm its validity within the 5-year expiry period. Full attendance across both days is mandatory for re-certification.

By participating, delegates will update their knowledge of construction legislation, learn new industry best practices, and refine managerial skills to comply with evolving legal responsibilities.

Important Information

• Delegates must complete the course before their current certificate expires; otherwise, they will need to attend the full SMSTS course.
• Certificates are issued as e-certificates by CITB within 2-3 weeks.

Objectives

By the end of the course, successful delegates will be able to:

• Manage health and safety on-site in line with current legal provisions and management responsibilities.
• Understand legal, moral, and social obligations to maintain a safe and compliant working environment.
• Identify and mitigate potential site hazards.
• Prepare method statements, risk assessments, and meet statutory requirements under the Health and Safety at Work Act.

Agenda

The CITB SMSTS Refresher Online Course includes:

• Updates on legislation and Approved Codes of Practice (ACOP).
• Practical implications of new and upcoming legislation.
• Accident reporting and prevention under RIDDOR.
• Focus areas for construction safety as outlined by HSE.
• Developing and implementing safety management systems.
• Effective contractor management.
• Communication strategies, including toolbox talks and inductions.
• Behavioural safety and methods to minimise human error.

Assessment

Delegates will complete a formal exam at the end of the course, consisting of:

• 25 questions: 18 multiple-choice (1 mark each) and 7 written/multi-response questions (2 marks each).
• Pass mark: 81% (26 out of 32).

The exam is conducted online via Zoom under supervision. Secondary devices, such as mobile phones, are not allowed during the assessment.

Certification

Delegates who successfully complete the course and pass the assessment will receive the CITB SMSTS Refresher Certificate, valid for 5 years.

Who Should Attend?

The course is suitable for individuals who have completed the 5-day SMSTS or 2-day SMSTS Refresher course and need to renew their certification. Certificates must be renewed every 5 years.

Suggested Progression

Participants can further develop their careers by pursuing:

• NVQ Level 6 in Construction Site Management.
• NVQ Level 6 in Construction Contracting Operations Management.

Prerequisites

• Valid certification of the 5-day SMSTS or previous SMSTS Refresher course within the last 5 years.
• A good understanding of spoken and written English.
• Access to a laptop or desktop computer with a webcam, microphone, and speakers (tablets are not supported).

This course is accredited by the CITB – Construction Industry Training Board (Site Safety Plus).
